Our Story

The 1970s brought significant changes to the city of Sweetwater. Florida International University was established just south of the city, major highways expanded access to the surrounding area, and increasing numbers of immigrants—particularly from Cuba and Nicaragua—made Sweetwater their home. Today, Sweetwater is a predominantly Hispanic community with a population of approximately 20,000 residents.

A congregation was first established here in 1950 as a mission of University Baptist of Coral Gables under the leadership of Rev. Jim Benton. The congregation eventually grew to approximately 126 members, and the present church building was constructed in 1958.

As Sweetwater’s population became increasingly Hispanic, the English-speaking congregation declined significantly. In 1979, in a generous act of kindness, the church transferred its property to a group of Hispanic believers who had been gathering at Tamiami Baptist Church.

That original group consisted of approximately 25 to 30 believers.

On May 20, 1979, Iglesia Bautista de Sweetwater was established as a Hispanic ministry. Rev. Miguel Ángel Calleiro served as its first pastor for eight years. He was followed by Rev. Pedro Pared, who faithfully served as pastor for another 25 years. Today, the church is pastored by Rev. Félix A. Valdivia.

Throughout its history, Sweetwater Baptist Church has experienced many seasons of change, yet it has remained committed to the message of the gospel. Today, we continue seeking to advance the Kingdom of God, trusting the Lord for the future and keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith.
